Imagine walking your dog on a peaceful day and suddenly facing an alligator! This is exactly what happened to Suzan Marciano, a 74-year-old woman from Florida. What she did next was nothing short of heroic.
A Walk Turned Scary
Suzan and her Golden Retriever mix, Nalu, often walked in Burt Aaronson South County Regional Park. They had been going there for eight years without any trouble. But one day, things changed. Nalu was off-leash and wandered close to the water. Suzan noticed a shape in the water. It was an alligator!
The Unthinkable Happens
In a flash, the alligator grabbed Nalu. Without thinking, Suzan jumped into action. She leaped onto the alligator and used her hands to push it away from Nalu. The gator bit Suzan’s hand, but she didn’t give up. She kept pulling, and finally, the alligator let go.
After the Attack
Both Suzan and Nalu were in shock. Suzan wanted to go home, but her friend insisted she go to the hospital. Suzan got six stitches for her hand. Nalu had surgery for puncture wounds on her stomach and thigh. It was a traumatic experience, but they were both alive and recovering.
Staying Safe
Despite the scare, Suzan doesn’t regret her brave act. She says, “If I hadn’t done what I did, I would have lost her and that would have been even more horrific for me.” Suzan and Nalu will still visit their favorite park, but they’ll be more careful. Nalu won’t get close to the water again.
Alligator Attacks on the Rise
Florida has seen a rise in alligator attacks since 2018. This is due to more people and development in the area. While the chances of an attack are still low, it’s a good idea to stay away from lakes and ponds in Florida, especially when walking your dogs.
