Casper, a herd dog, squared off with a pack of coyotes to protect his sheep and came out as the hero of the night.
A Midnight Attack
It all started on the night of November 3rd. John Wierwille, Casper’s owner, had already seen a pack of coyotes lurking around his property earlier that evening. With some quick thinking, John scared them off by yelling and tossing rocks. The coyotes retreated, and John thought the danger had passed.
But the night had more in store. Around 2:30 a.m., John was woken up by the sound of frantic barking. This time, the coyotes were back—and they weren’t just lurking anymore. They had made their way into the sheep pen, and the only thing standing between them and the flock was Casper and his doggy partner, Daisy.
A Battle Begins
John rushed out to see what was happening. The scene was intense: five or six coyotes had made their way into the pen, and there were even more nearby. Casper wasn’t backing down. He stood firm, ready to protect the sheep at all costs. As the coyotes circled, John realized they weren’t even paying attention to him—they were completely focused on Casper.
Then, in an instant, Casper charged. Without hesitation, he launched himself at the coyotes, determined to drive them away. What followed was a brutal, 30-minute battle. Fur flew, teeth clashed, and the night was filled with growls and barks as Casper fought for his life and his herd.
Casper’s Disappearance
Eventually, the coyotes realized they couldn’t win. They scattered, splitting off into different directions, but Casper wasn’t finished. He chased them down to a nearby creek, continuing the fight even as they tried to escape.
Then Casper disappeared.
John was left standing, grateful that his sheep were safe but deeply worried about Casper. The dog had killed eight coyotes that night, but now he was gone, and all John could find were parts of Casper’s tail and drops of blood. Fearing the worst, John and his neighbors spent the next day searching for him, hoping against hope that he had survived the fight.
The Hero Returns
Two long days later, Casper finally came home. He limped back to the sheep pen, bruised, battered, and missing part of his tail, but alive. John could hardly believe it. Casper looked like he’d been through a war, but in his eyes, you could see that all he wanted was to check on his sheep and make sure they were okay.
“He looked like death,” John said. “But he just gave me this look like, ‘Stop worrying about me and just take care of me.’”
With the help of the Lifeline Animal Project, Casper was rushed into surgery. He had deep wounds on his neck and back, and his tail had to be amputated. The road to recovery wasn’t going to be easy, but Casper’s spirit was as strong as ever.

Despite everything, Casper’s family couldn’t be more grateful for his bravery. Thanks to him, the sheep were safe, and so were John and Daisy. Even though Casper will need time to heal and adjust, one thing’s for sure—he’s earned his place as a true hero.
