The Discovery
On a sunny day, Shena was enjoying a drive past blueberry fields when she saw something odd in the distance. At first, it seemed like just another piece of garbage. But as she got closer, her heart dropped. What she thought was trash turned out to be a black dog, lying still and unresponsive. The poor dog had a broken leg and was clearly in distress.
Determined to help, Shena didn’t hesitate. Using a strap from her fanny pack, she created a makeshift slip lead. She spoke softly to the dog, trying to comfort her and gain her trust. Once at the Regional Animal Protection Society, where Shena worked, the team performed an initial exam. Sadly, the dog didn’t have a microchip, so her past remained a mystery. Shena decided to take her home, hoping that a loving environment would help her heal.
Two days later, the dog underwent surgery to repair her broken leg. During her recovery, Shena noticed that the pup was unusually sensitive to sedation. She became a “mushy baby,” craving cuddles and comfort. Shena affectionately named her Blueberry, inspired by the blueberry fields where she was found.
A New Beginning
As Blueberry’s leg healed over the next three months, she began to adapt to her new life. Shena introduced her to the other dogs and cats in her home. Blueberry made fast friends, especially with one of Shena’s cats, who instantly took to her with affectionate rubs.
Initially, Shena had planned to foster Blueberry, but it soon became clear that the bond they shared was special. Blueberry’s past hardships melted away as she blossomed into a loving and affectionate dog.
